Composer, conductor, organiser and teacher.
He trained culturally and musically in Genoa, Bologna and Rome, studying composition, conducting and obtaining a degree in Music Disciplines (University of Bologna).
In 1982/83 he was a student of conducting under Franco Ferrara and between 1984 and 1988 he was assistant to Luciano Berio with whom he realised (on commission from Alexander Pereira) the elaboration and transcription of Hindemith's 'Wir bauen eine stadt' performed in 1988 at the Konzerthaus in Vienna.
Scogna's works have been performed in the most prestigious venues, including, the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Teatro dell'Opera in Rome, Teatro Comunale in Florence, Biennale di Venezia, Centre Pompidou in Paris, Konzerthaus in Vienna, Auditorium Nacional in Madrid, recorded by RCA, BMG Ariola and broadcast by the major European broadcasters, including RAI, BBC, RNE, BRT and RadioFrance.
In 1998, he represented RAI at the Prix Italia with the radio opera 'L'Arpa Magica' on a text by E. Sanguineti.
He has given lectures and seminars on his own music in Europe and in various universities in the United States.
In October 2002, 'La memoria perduta' directed by Pier'Alli, an opera commissioned by the Teatro dell'Opera in Rome, was performed with great success.
Parallel to composition, since 1990 he has pursued an international career as a conductor, both in the traditional and operatic repertoire (with the rediscovery of important works of the past for which he has often personally realised revisions (Pergolesi, Boccherini, Rossini), as well as in the repertoire of 20th-century and contemporary music with an impressive number of first performances of major living composers, including Aldo Clementi, Sylvano Bussotti, Luis De Pablo, Giacomo Manzoni, Ennio Morricone, Adriano Guarnieri, and 20th-century historical composers such as Satie, Rota (world premiere recording of the opera "I due timidi") and Giancarlo Menotti (The Telephone/The Medium).
He has gained important experience over many years in the field of music organisation and promotion both through his activity as Consultant and Artistic Director (RAI, MIBACT, Musica/Realtà, Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, BMG Universal, SIAE, MIUR), which has led him to have relations and contacts with the most important International Music Institutions, while also taking on the position of Conductor (both Principal and Guest) of various Orchestras (Iceland Symphony Orchestra, Fondazione Orchestra Cantelli di Milano, Orchestra Sinfonica della Città Metropolitana di Bari and Ensemble Contemporaneo dell'Orchestra Nazionale dell'Accademia Nazionale di S. Cecilia);
He has carried out music teaching activities (as a teacher of Composition, History of Music and Conducting), devising radio and television programmes for RAI, of which he was also the presenter. He has been a tenured professor at Italian conservatories for over 35 years, including S. Pietro a Maiella in Naples, Gioachino Rossini in Pesaro, L. Refice di Frosinone and has held seminars and master classes in the most important international venues (Italy, France, Spain, USA), writing articles and serving on the editorial board of music journals (NRMI-Nuova Rivista Musicale Italiana-ERI-RAI, 1985 La Musica, RISM-Répertoire international des sources musicales- Paris) and international juries of music competitions and has managed, with positions of responsibility, important institutions such as: President of the SIAE Commission for musical elaborations and revisions, Member of the Music Commission of the SIAE and Member of the Music Commission of the Mibact (FUS), Responsible Coordinator for the MIUR of the working group related to class A 57 for the National Teachers' Competition and Consultant for the Italian Government regarding the: " Adoption of the Decree of the President of the Republic on the Singing of Italians-Inno di Mameli."
For his prestigious activity in 2013 he received the De Sica Prize for classical music, previously awarded to Abbado, Chailly, Berio and Muti.
He is a Cavaliere Ordine e al Merito of the Italian Republic.
